Local pastors urge compassion toward refugees

Local faith leaders are calling for compassion toward the Syrian refugees fleeing their country’s civil war.

On Tuesday Gov. Scott Walker sent a letter to Secretary of State John Kerry stating that he “cannot authorize the cooperation of our state in any efforts to resettle Syrian refugees in Wisconsin.” He fears the safety of Wisconsinites will be threatened by refugees that “could pose a potential risk.”

However, the Rev. Matthew Buterbaugh of St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church said he believes Christians should welcome refugees. He said the Bible is overflowing with examples of Jews and early Christians helping the needy and displaced.

“I cannot see a Christian response that does not involve welcoming refugees into our midsts,” Buterbaugh said.
